Bookkeeping for small businesses in Margate, FL
Serving Margate, FL and Broward County.
For a Margate business owner, starting catch-up bookkeeping means deciding which unfinished months belong in the first project, not simply naming the oldest missing report. A useful scope connects the period you need reviewed with the records available and any earlier gaps that may affect it. Pau Bookkeeping offers separately scoped catch-up and clean-up work in QuickBooks Online. Before requesting an assessment, build a month-by-month picture of what is complete, uncertain, or untouched.
Map unfinished months before choosing a starting point
Make a simple list of months, beginning with the last period you believe was fully finished. For each month, note whether transactions were categorized, bank and credit card accounts were reconciled, and financial statements were produced. Mark anything you cannot verify as uncertain rather than complete. A month with transactions entered is not necessarily a finished month.
Include every business bank and card account in that review. Record which accounts opened or closed during the period, too. This preparation helps frame the assessment around actual gaps instead of assuming that every account needs exactly the same number of months addressed.
Separate your preferred period from the scope to assess
Identify why you want particular months addressed first. You may need a clearer view of recent activity or want to establish a starting point for ongoing bookkeeping. Explain that priority, but distinguish your preferred date range from the range that needs assessment.
In a hypothetical business, the owner might request only the latest three months while an earlier bank reconciliation remains unfinished. That earlier gap is worth raising before setting the project boundaries. Ask: What information is needed to evaluate the starting month? Which earlier uncertainties could affect the requested period? What would remain outside the initial project if we limit its scope?
Match each proposed month with available records
For every month under consideration, identify whether you can provide bank and card access or statements covering the overdue period. Note missing statements, accounts you cannot currently access, and transactions whose business purpose you need to clarify. Do not hide a difficult month by leaving it off the list.
Owner preparation also means knowing who can answer transaction questions. Gather relevant explanations while details are still available, and distinguish confirmed information from guesses. The owner supplies account records and occasional answers. Ask whether the available records support assessing your proposed period and what missing information needs attention before the scope can be settled.
Define what comes after the initial project
Once the proposed catch-up period is clear, identify any unfinished months outside it and discuss where ongoing monthly work would begin. Catch-up and clean-up are separate projects, scoped by how many months are behind. They should not be confused with Essentials, which covers core monthly bookkeeping: transaction categorization, bank and card reconciliation, and financial statements.

Frequently asked questions
Should I request every unfinished month at once?
Disclose all known gaps, even if you want a smaller initial project. Ask which months belong together and which could remain outside the proposed scope. Listing the full backlog does not mean assuming every month will be included.
Can I start if I do not know the exact backlog?
You can describe what you know during the assessment. Bring your best month-by-month outline, identify uncertain completion dates, and list available account records. Explain what you cannot verify rather than choosing an unsupported start date.
